Physical Inspection & Tape Preparation

Before any tape is inserted into our recorders, it undergoes a meticulous visual inspection. We examine the cassette casing, ribbon tension, and spool mechanisms to ensure the tape runs smoothly and safely without risk of jamming or tearing.

If your tape has suffered a minor snap, broken casing, or detached leader tape over the years, we repair and splice it prior to playback so your family memories can be safely recovered.

Playback & Stabilisation

We capture your tapes using high quality playback decks maintained to the highest mechanical standards.

Audio & Video Signal Optimisation

Older analog tapes often suffer from colour fading, tracking lines, and quiet audio. During conversion, we calibrate and balance the audio levels to bring out dialogue and speech.

We gently optimize contrast and colour saturation while cleaning up background hiss, ensuring your home footage looks vibrant and sounds clear on modern soundbars and TV speakers.

Trimming & Quality Check

Every video is individually monitored and trimmed by hand. We remove unrecorded blank tape or TV recordings at the start and end of recordings so you only receive your actual family memories.

Delivery & Modern Media Formats

By default, your videos are converted into high-definition MP4 (H.264) files. MP4 is the universal standard for modern digital video—easy to watch on Smart TVs, tablets, PCs, and phones, and simple to share with family or store in cloud backups.

For customers who still enjoy physical discs or want a keepsake for older relatives, we also offer complete DVD transfers upon request.

How to Prepare Your Tapes for Sending

1. Gather & Label Your Tapes

Tapes are fairly robust, so keep them in their original plastic cases or cardboard sleeves if you have them (don’t worry if you don’t). If you know what is on the tapes, feel free to number or label them—we will use your labels to name your digital MP4 files so everything stays organized.

2. Pack Securely with Bubble Wrap

Place your tapes into a sturdy cardboard box, lining the bottom and sides with bubble wrap. Fill any empty gaps with extra bubble wrap, packing paper, or crumpled newspaper so the tapes cannot slide around. When you gently shake the sealed box, nothing inside should move or rattle during transit.

3. Use Royal Mail Special/Tracked Delivery

Because these are irreplaceable family memories, we recommend sending your package via Royal Mail Tracked 24 or Special Delivery (or an equivalent premium courier). This ensures your parcel is fully tracked from door to door and delivered safely into our hands.

Prefer doorstep collection? Simply select the collection option when placing your order, and we’ll arrange for Royal Mail to collect your parcel directly from your home—no trip to the Post Office needed!

(Please avoid budget couriers such as Evri or Yodel when sending irreplaceable media).

I started Silver Dog Studios because I’ve always loved bringing old photographs back to life. There’s something special about seeing a faded slide reveal details and memories that haven’t been properly seen in decades.

With over 26 years of experience in digital imaging and restoration, I personally oversee every project that comes through the studio. Whether you’re sending a few family slides or thousands of images, they’ll be treated with the same care and attention I’d give my own collection.

Paul was so well organised and the quality of the digital prints is great. The task involved him removing all the photos from the albums, in some cases the photos were so well stuck down he had to cut them out and scan these by hand. The scanned photos were labelled in file folders by the year on the photo album and Paul also returned all the photos in envelopes labelled with the album year. We now how cloud copies and memory stick backup. So we won’t be leaving a load of albums for our children to sort and no doubt throw out. Though I still can’t bring myself to throw out the actual photos 😂. A brilliant job by Paul who is also very quick to respond to emails and questions. Well done and thank you.

Which videotape formats can you convert?

We convert all consumer videotape formats: Full-size VHS, S-VHS, VHS-C (camcorder cassettes), Video8, Hi8, Digital8, and MiniDV.

What if one of my tapes is blank or recorded from the TV?

We personally check every tape. If a tape is completely blank or contains only broadcast television (like old soap operas), we do not charge you for the transfer.

Can you fix snapped, damaged, or chewed tapes?

Yes. We can safely splice broken tape ribbons and transplant reels into fresh cassette shells to recover your footage.

How do I watch the digital files?

We supply your videos as standard MP4 files on a USB memory stick. You can simply plug it directly into your Smart TV’s USB port, computer, or transfer files to your iPad or smartphone.

Do I get my original tapes back?

Yes, 100%. All of your original videotapes are securely repacked and returned via Royal Mail Tracked delivery.

Can you edit the videos?

Yes, we can trim excess footage, or remove sections, add titles, whatever you need we should be able to do

Do you AI enhance the videos?

Currently no, we are constantly testing these tools and while on the surface they can seem to work magic. A lot of the time the footage becomes plastic looking and people distort from the people they were! We can however do stabilisation and clean up work via our editing software which can improve the quality of the video.

Do you offer express / fast track service?

We are unable to offer fast track services for video work.
