Our Complete Cine Reel Transfer Process

Physical Inspection, Cleaning & Splicing

Every reel is manually inspected on rewinds. We examine the film stock for brittleness, repair separated splices with archival splicing tape, and gently clean away decades of dust, loose hair, and dirt using film-safe antistatic lubricant.

Frame-by-Frame HD Telecine Capture

We capture your film using professional, dedicated cine film scanners equipped with enlarged gate apertures. Every single frame is captured individually by an HD digital sensor—completely eliminating motion blur and screen flicker.

Cold LED Illumination & Film Safety

Old movie projectors used hot halogen bulbs that frequently scorched or burnt stopped film. Our equipment uses an ultra-cool LED light source that remains completely cold to the touch, ensuring 100% safety for your irreplaceable original film.

Speed Correction, Colour & Exposure Grading

Standard 8 and Super 8 were shot at 16 or 18 frames per second. We encode your video at its native frame rate so motion is smooth and lifelike. We then perform digital colour correction to bring back faded warmth and detail.

Modern MP4 Digital Delivery

Your finished films are exported into universal MP4 (H.264) video files. They play smoothly on any Smart TV, Mac, iPad, iPhone, or Windows PC. We deliver them via fast cloud download link, on a USB flash drive, or on DVD upon request.

How to Prepare Your Reels for Sending

1. Keep in Original Containers & Label

Leave your reels inside their original plastic cans, metal tins, or card boxes. If you’d like your reels digitised in a specific chronological order, simply number the boxes (e.g. 1, 2, 3), and we will name your digital files to match.

2. Secure Loose Ends & Pack with Bubble Wrap

If the film leader is loose, secure it with a small tab of low-tack painter’s tape. Line a sturdy cardboard box with bubble wrap and pack the reels flat. When sealed, nothing inside should rattle or slide.

3. Use Royal Mail Special/Tracked Delivery

Because these are irreplaceable family memories, we recommend sending your package via Royal Mail Tracked 24 or Special Delivery (or an equivalent premium courier). This ensures your parcel is fully tracked from door to door and delivered safely into our hands.

Prefer doorstep collection? Simply select the collection option when placing your order, and we’ll arrange for Royal Mail to collect your parcel directly from your home—no trip to the Post Office needed!

(Please avoid budget couriers such as Evri or Yodel when sending irreplaceable media).

I started Silver Dog Studios because I’ve always loved bringing old photographs back to life. There’s something special about seeing a faded slide reveal details and memories that haven’t been properly seen in decades.

With over 26 years of experience in digital imaging and restoration, I personally oversee every project that comes through the studio. Whether you’re sending a few family slides or thousands of images, they’ll be treated with the same care and attention I’d give my own collection.

 Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Paul at Silver Dog Studios has recently had the epic task of digitising our 60-70 hard copy photo albums literally 3000 photos. Paul was so well organised and the quality of the digital prints is great. The task involved him removing all the photos from the albums, in some cases the photos were so well stuck down he had to cut them out and scan these by hand. The scanned photos were labelled in file folders by the year on the photo album and Paul also returned all the photos in envelopes labelled with the album year. We now how cloud copies and memory stick backup. So we won’t be leaving a load of albums for our children to sort and no doubt throw out. Though I still can’t bring myself to throw out the actual photos 😂. A brilliant job by Paul who is also very quick to respond to emails and questions. Well done and thank you.

What is the difference between Standard 8 and Super 8? Do I need to know?

You don’t need to worry! Our scanners automatically handle both Standard 8 (Regular 8) and Super 8 reels. We will identify and scan them at their correct frame size and speed automatically.

Will my film melt or burn in your machines?

Never. Unlike old household projectors that used hot bulbs, our scanners use cold LED light sources with zero heat output, ensuring zero risk of heat damage.

What happens if my film is broken or snaps?

Old film splices frequently dry out and fail over 50+ years. We inspect every reel beforehand and repair broken splices and loose leader tape with archival film tape at no extra charge.

My cine film has no sound—is that normal?

Yes, over 95% of 8mm home cine films were recorded completely silent. If your film has an amber/brown magnetic audio stripe down the edge, let us know and we can transfer the sound track as well.

Will my original reels be returned to me?

Yes, absolutely. Your original reels and cases are handled with extreme care and safely returned via tracked Royal Mail delivery alongside your order.

Can I watch the digitised films on my Smart TV?

Yes! We supply your films as modern MP4 files. You can plug a USB drive directly into your Smart TV, stream them via Apple TV/Chromecast, or watch on any computer, tablet, or phone.
