APS Film Scanning now available
If you grew up, got married, went on family holidays, or celebrated the Millennium in the late 1990s or early 2000s, chances are you have a shoebox or drawer containing several small, oval plastic cassettes.
Those compact little cartridges are APS (Advanced Photo System) film — most commonly sold as Kodak Advantix or Fuji Nexia. For years, we’ve had customers ask: "Can you scan these? The film won’t come out!"
For a while we did scan them via the APS adaptor for the Nikon 5000, but these were very fragile beasts and would constnatly strip gears which made them unusable.Today, we are thrilled to announce that Silver Dog Studios now officially offers dedicated, professional APS film scanning via a Canon CanoScan FS4000US!
Why APS Film Was Special (And Why It’s Been So Hard to Digitize)
Launched in 1996 by Kodak, Fujifilm, Canon, Nikon, and Minolta, APS was the high-tech bridge between traditional 35mm film and digital photography. Cameras were ultra-compact, drop-in loading was foolproof, and you could switch between Classic (C), High-Definition (H), and Panoramic (P) photo framing on the fly.
Crucially, the film was designed never to leave the protective cassette. When a camera lab developed your film, they wound the negatives straight back inside the light-tight cartridge for permanent, dust-free storage.
While this was brilliant for keeping negatives safe from fingerprints, it created a major headache decades later: standard consumer flatbed scanners cannot scan APS film without risking irreversible damage to the delicate spool mechanism and film leader.
How We Scan Your APS Cartridges at Silver Dog Studios
We handle your APS film with the exact same care and precision we apply to 35mm slides and medium format negatives:
- Dedicated Optical Cassette Scanning: We use specialized film transport mechanisms that gently unspool the film from its light-tight gate without touching the emulsion, scanning frame-by-frame, and rewinding it safely back into its original cartridge.
- Full Uncropped Negatives: When APS photos were originally printed, labs often cropped the picture depending on whether you chose C, H, or P format. Our scans capture the full uncropped negative area, frequently revealing people and details on the edges of the frame you may never have seen before!
- Digital ICE™ Infrared Dust & Scratch Removal: Embedded dust, fine scratches, and surface blemishes are automatically mapped with infrared light and erased without softening the photograph.
- Individual Hand Colour Restoration: Film from the 90s and 2000s often suffers from colour shift (usually a magenta or cyan hue). Every single image is individually reviewed and balanced in Photoshop by hand to restore natural skin tones, vibrant skies, and realistic contrast.
- Delivered Your Way: Available as high-resolution JPEGs (ideal for sharing and viewing on modern 4K TVs and phones) or uncompressed 16-bit TIFFs for archival longevity. We can deliver via fast cloud download, USB flash drive, DVD slideshow, or physical photographic prints.
A Quick 5-Second Check: Is Your Film Ready to Scan?
Before packing your cartridges, take a quick glance at the flat bottom of each APS cassette. You’ll see four small molded symbols numbered 1 to 4:
- 1 (Circle): Unexposed (brand new blank roll)
- 2 (Half-Circle): Partially exposed roll
- 3 (Cross / Asterisk): Fully exposed, but not yet developed
- 4 (Square): Processed / Developed
We can only scan cartridges showing Indicator #4 (a solid white square or circle). This confirms your film was developed when you originally took the pictures and contains finished negatives ready for high-resolution digitisation.
Transparent, Per-Cartridge Pricing
Rather than making you count individual frames or guess how many photos were taken, we keep our APS pricing completely straightforward and per-cartridge:
- 25-Exposure Cartridge: £10.00 per cartridge
- 40-Exposure Cartridge: £14.00 per cartridge
(That works out to under 35p per frame for high-resolution scanning, full Digital ICE dust suppression, and manual colour restoration!)
All APS scanning orders are also fully eligible for our site-wide volume discounts (5% to 15% off larger orders) and free return postage on orders over £150.
