Understanding Your APS Film
Act today to save your precious memories before they are lost forever
15, 25 & 40 Exposure Rolls
APS film came in three roll lengths: 15, 25, or 40 pictures (most common were Kodak Advantix and Fuji Nexia 25-exposure rolls). We scan every single exposed frame on the roll.
Cassette Status Indicator
Look at the bottom of your cartridge. You’ll see four small numbered symbols:
1 = Unexposed
2 = Partially exposed
3 = Fully exposed (unprocessed)
4 = Processed / Developed.
We can only scan cartridges showing indicator #4 (a solid white circle or square) indicating the film has already been developed..
Film Stays Inside the Cassette
Unlike standard 35mm negatives that were cut into strips, APS negatives remain safely wound inside their protective light-tight cassette for life.
Our Complete Scanning Process
1
Inspection & Cassette Pre-Check
We verify that each cassette shows status indicator #4 (developed), gently inspect the light-trap door, and blow away any external dust or lint before scanning.
2
Dedicated Canon APS Motorized Capture
We scan your cartridges using professional Canon scanners equipped with dedicated motorized APS feeder mechanisms. The scanner automatically extends the film safely without human hands ever touching the delicate emulsion.
3
Digital ICE™ Infrared Scratch Removal
During the scan, an infrared pass detects surface imperfections, scratches, and dust particles, seamlessly removing them without blurring facial details or hair.
4
Manual Color Correction & Cropping
Each frame is individually reviewed in Photoshop. We correct 90s color casts (such as yellowing or magenta fade), adjust contrast and shadows, and ensure precise edge cropping
5
High-Quality Digital Delivery
Your photos are delivered as full-resolution JPEGs (or uncompressed TIFF on request). Files are organized by roll number, available via instant cloud download, and returned on a USB memory stick along with all your original cartridges.
How to Prepare Your APS Film for Sending
1 - Leave Film Inside the Cartridge
Never attempt to force open the cartridge or pull the film out with tweezers. The cartridge is designed to keep your film safe from dust and fingerprints.
2. Pack Securely with Bubble Wrap
Place your cartridges into a sturdy cardboard box lined with bubble wrap. Fill any empty gaps with packing paper or bubble wrap so the cartridges cannot rattle during transit.
3. Use Royal Mail Special/Tracked Delivery
Because these are one-of-a-kind memories, we highly recommend sending your package via Royal Mail Tracked 24 or Special Delivery (or a premium courier service). This ensures your parcel is fully tracked, and delivered directly to our hands the very next day.
Or check the collection box when ordering and we will arrange for Royal Mail to come to your house to collect.
Please do not use budget couriers to send your items.
About Us
Hi, I’m Paul.
I started Silver Dog Studios because I’ve always loved bringing old photographs back to life. There’s something special about seeing a faded slide reveal details and memories that haven’t been properly seen in decades.
With over 26 years of experience in digital imaging and restoration, I personally oversee every project that comes through the studio. Whether you’re sending a few family slides or thousands of images, they’ll be treated with the same care and attention I’d give my own collection.
If you’d like to know more about the process, or want to chat before sending anything in, feel free to get in touch. I’ll be happy to help.

Paul at Silver Dog Studios has recently had the epic task of digitising our 60-70 hard copy photo albums literally 3000 photos. Paul was so well organised and the quality of the digital prints is great. The task involved him removing all the photos from the albums, in some cases the photos were so well stuck down he had to cut them out and scan these by hand. The scanned photos were labelled in file folders by the year on the photo album and Paul also returned all the photos in envelopes labelled with the album year. We now how cloud copies and memory stick backup. So we won’t be leaving a load of albums for our children to sort and no doubt throw out. Though I still can’t bring myself to throw out the actual photos 😂. A brilliant job by Paul who is also very quick to respond to emails and questions. Well done and thank you.Posted on Google![]()

Frequently Asked Questions
Check the circular end of the cartridge. There are 4 numbered icons. Look for symbol #4 (a solid white square/circle next to the number 4). If symbol 4 is marked, your film has been developed and is ready to scan.
We specialize in scanning previously developed APS film. If your film has never been chemically developed (status 1, 2, or 3), it must be sent to a specialist C-41 film lab for developing before it can be scanned.
No! Please never attempt to open the canister or pull the film ribbon out. Our Canon scanner is equipped with a specialized motorized drive that safely winds the film out for scanning and winds it safely back in when finished.
We scan APS film at high optical resolution 4000 DPI, perfect for viewing on 4K TVs or printing enlargements.
Yes, 100%. Your cartridges are completely undamaged during scanning and will be securely packed and returned via tracked delivery.
Yes. For colour film, we utilize highly advanced infrared scanning technology (Digital ICE). This physically maps dust and scratches on the film surface and seamlessly removes them during the scan without blurring the image.
